ਬਠਿੰਡਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਮਸਹੂਰ ਫੋਜੀ ਚੌਕ ਤੇ ਲੱਗੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਜਮਾਂਦਾਰ (ਨਾਇਬ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ) ਨੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਰੇ ....! ਲੇਖਕ - ਬ੍ਰਿਗੇਡੀਅਰ ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਾਹਲੋਂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਜਮਾਂਦਾਰ (ਨਾਇਬ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ) ਨੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫੌਜ ਦਾ ਸਿਰਫ ਇੱਕੋ ਇੱਕ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਵੇਕਲਾ ਐਸਾ ਸੈਨਿਕ ਯੋਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ‘ਵਿਕਟੋਰੀਆ ਕ੍ਰਾਸ’ ਅਤੇ ‘ਮਹਾਂਵੀਰ ਚੱਕਰ’ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ । ਨੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸੰਨ 1915 ਵਿਚ ਸ. ਭਾਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਪਿੰਡ ਬਹਾਦਰਪੁਰ (ਬਠਿੰਡਾ) ਵਿਖੇ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ 24 ਮਾਰਚ, 1933 ਨੂੰ ਫੌਜ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਤੀ ਹੋ ਗਏ । ਦੂਸਰੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਜਦੋਂ 11 ਮਾਰਚ, 1944 ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਾਨੀ ਫੌਜ ਨੇ 11 ਸਿੱਖ ਬਟਾਲੀਅਨ (ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਟ ਸਿੱਖ), ਜੋ ਕਿ ਅਰਕਾਨ (ਬਰ੍ਹਮਾ) ਵਿਖੇ ਤਾਇਨਾਤ ਸੀ, ਦੇ ਇਕ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਧਾਵਾ ਬੋਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਨਾਇਕ ਨੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮੋਹਰਲੇ ਸੈਕਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਰੂਪ ਚ ਜਖਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਏ । ਪਰ ਇਸਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੰਗਾਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਤੇ ਫਤਿਹ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕੀਤੀ । ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਨੇ ਨੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਵ-ਉੱਤਮ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ, ਸ਼ਹਿਨਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ ਬਦਲੇ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ “ਵਿਕਟੋਰੀਆ ਕ੍ਰਾਸ” ਨਾਲ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ । ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਫਿਰ ਜਦੋਂ 12 ਦਸੰਬਰ , 1947 ਨੂੰ 1 ਸਿੱਖ ਬਟਾਲੀਅਨ ਨੂੰ ਭੱਟ
